Background Ubiquitin (Ub) is a small protein composed of 76 amino acids. Ub is found only in eukaryotic organisms among which it shows a strong sequence conservation. The protein is present in all cell types. Gly to Ala substitution at the C-terminus (G76A) leads to the expression of a mutated protein which inhibits the ubiquitin hydrolases and prevents the removal of ubiquitin from proteinubiquitin conjugates.
