Cell-permeable. A teratogen and sedative-hypnotic with inherent anti-inflammatory properties. A selective inhibitor of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) synthesis. Thalidomide initiates its teratogenic effects by binding to cereblon (CRBN), a thalidomide-binding protein, and inhibiting the associated ubiquitin ligase activity.
