Background Ubiquitin (Ub) is a small protein composed of 76 amino acids. Ub is found only in eukaryotic organisms among which it shows a strong sequence conservation. The protein is present in all cell types. Ub containing a K48R substitution prevents the formation of polyubiquitin chains via Lys48 linkages with monoubiquitin molecules, avoiding the degradation of protein substrates.
