Characteristics Nigericin is a polyether ionophore which disrupts membrane potential and stimulates ATPase activity in mitochondria. Ion selectivity is K+> Rb+ Cs+>> Na+. Also activates NLRP3/NALP3 and signals through pannexin-1 to induce caspase-1 maturation and IL-1beta processing and release.
