The anti-Rainbow trout Ig monclonal antibody is used to detect salmonid parasites (bacteria or viruses) indirectly by detecting the Rainbow trout immunoglobins. This clone only recognizes the immunoglobin heavy chain found in Oncorhynchus species (ie. Coho, Chum, Sockeye and Chinook) but not the Atlantic salmon heavy chain. By using the anti-Rainbow trout Ig mAb, specific antibodies for each fish parasite are not needed to identify infecting bacteria and viruses. Instead, the naturally occurring trout antibodies (present in increased numbers in infected fish) are used. ELISA plates can be coated with known fish parasites and screened with the in- fected serum to determine the parasite. This mAb can also be used to detect un- known parasites by monitoring the level of Igs in a Rainbow trout. An increased level could indicate infection. Specific uses for this monoclonal antibody include ELISA, Western blots and im- munofluorescence (ie. FACS).
